Kimi Antonelli remains the leader of the drivers' standings after the 2026 British Grand Prix, but his advantage has been reduced to 25 points after he failed to score at Silverstone.
The Mercedes driver had looked to be in genuine contention for victory while chasing Charles Leclerc. However, an unusual Mercedes wheel shield failure compromised the balance of his car and forced him off the circuit several times.
Antonelli's situation worsened when he received a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits. That sanction dropped him outside the top 10, leaving him without points despite having been in a potential race-winning scenario.

George Russell was the biggest beneficiary of his team-mate's problems. By finishing second, Russell is now only 25 points behind Antonelli, the equivalent of one race victory under the Formula 1 points system.
Lewis Hamilton also reduced the gap after completing the podium in third for Ferrari. Hamilton is now 32 points behind Antonelli, making the fight at the top tighter after a weekend that had initially looked capable of strengthening Mercedes' position.
In the constructors' standings, Charles Leclerc's victory and Hamilton's podium allowed Ferrari to gain 22 points on Mercedes. That was a major boost for Ferrari after Silverstone turned into a damaging weekend for Mercedes.
The 2026 British GP became a key turning point in the title fight because Antonelli's scoreless race changed the pressure at the top of the standings. The next focus will be Mercedes' response to the technical issue and whether Ferrari can carry its momentum into the following round.
