Good news has emerged from the Aprilia Racing camp. Spanish rider Jorge Martin has decided not to undergo surgery on his problematic arm, at least for now. This decision came after Martin experienced no significant issues at the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.
The health issue resurfaced after Martin complained of arm pain during the Misano GP. Surgery to treat compartment syndrome—commonly known as arm pump—was considered. However, after evaluation, Martin chose not to go under the knife. Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola welcomed the decision.
“I think Jorge wants to stay focused and consistent, and for now not take risks,” said Rivola. “In my opinion, the risk of not operating is smaller than the risk of operating, since he had no problems at the Red Bull Ring.”
Rivola also emphasised that the issue Martin faced in Misano was not necessarily solely due to his arm. “On Sunday morning in Misano he didn't feel great, so maybe other factors played a role, but I don't know. Let's hope everything goes well. We are starting the Asian races in excellent form and with a better understanding of the bike,” he added.
The decision is seen as positive because surgery carries its own risks. Martin has adapted his riding style on the Aprilia RS-GP to reduce strain on his arm. Meanwhile, Aprilia has continued to refine the bike's setup, and Rivola feels the team now has a better grasp of the RS-GP's characteristics.
By avoiding surgery, Martin's preparation for upcoming races will not be interrupted by recovery. However, his arm condition will be closely monitored. This weekend, Twin Ring Motegi in Japan will be the first test. The circuit holds bad memories for Martin after a heavy crash last year that also involved his teammate, Marco Bezzecchi. Nevertheless, Martin is eager to face the overseas races.
“The Asian tour begins and we will face it with enthusiasm,” Martin said briefly. Now, all eyes will be on Martin's performance at Motegi and beyond, to see if the decision to skip surgery pays off.
