Jorge Martin has decided against undergoing surgery on his right arm, at least for now. The Aprilia rider made this choice after a strong performance in Austria, where he won the Sprint and finished second in the main race, reclaiming the MotoGP championship lead.
Previously, Martin suffered from arm pump at Misano, which caused him to fade to fifth place. He had planned to have surgery if the problem recurred in Austria. However, his success at the Red Bull Ring proved that his condition is still manageable.
“I’m not at my 100%. But I’m feeling much better than I felt at Misano. So, we are in the right direction,” said Jorge Martin after finishing runner-up to Pedro Acosta but beating his nearest title rival, Marc Marquez, in both races.
“I will not go into surgery tomorrow. I will try to continue like this.”
The decision comes after Austria was effectively Martin’s final opportunity for an operation before a demanding sequence of five overseas events in six weekends. He now leads the standings by 12 points over Marquez and 42 points over Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi.
Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola insists that regaining the championship lead did not influence Martin’s decision. “No, I don’t think so. I think Jorge wants to stay focused, consistent, and not take risks right now. I think the lower risk is not having surgery than having surgery, since he had no problems today,” Rivola told Sky Italia.
Rivola added that Martin’s condition at Misano might have been affected by a series of additional factors, but he hopes everything goes well. “Let’s hope everything goes well.”
Martin’s right arm will face its next test when practice begins at Motegi next weekend. “Now we move into the Asian tour in, I think, a great shape, understanding the bike a bit more. And I think it’s good news [not to have an operation], because going into surgery is a big risk,” Martin concluded.
