Joan Mir has spoken out. The Spanish rider finally opened up about his move to Gresini Racing from 2027, while also aiming a subtle criticism at Honda's lack of progress. In an exclusive interview with Crash, Mir admitted that choosing Gresini was not without reason, but because the team has consistently provided competitive machinery.
“Choosing Gresini happened because they have had competitive bikes. Marc and Alex Marquez went there at the worst moment of their careers and still performed well. That's clear proof,” Mir said, referring to the Marquez brothers' impressive form despite difficult circumstances.
2026 Season: Over-Optimism Leading to Crashes
Mir also reflected on a promising start to 2026. “We started the season with high expectations. The Sepang test was very good. But I was too optimistic, wanted to start the year the way I ended last season. That made me take too many risks and crash a lot. That was a management error on my part,” he admitted.
If not for the crashes, Mir believes his championship position would be much better. “People look at my current position. But if I hadn't crashed in some races, I could be in the top five or six. We have the potential, we just need to finish races,” he stressed.
Disappointment with Honda: “I Expected More”
Despite acknowledging the good atmosphere at Honda, Mir couldn't hide his disappointment. “The environment inside the team is very good, they listen to me and want good results. But the reality is, half the season has passed and we haven't received a significant upgrade. I'm a bit disappointed, I expected more. Honda has the capacity to improve, but maybe it takes time,” he said.
The decision to move to Gresini was clearly made with careful consideration. Mir wants to feel the competitiveness he had with Suzuki. “With Suzuki, I knew my package. Now it's hard to perform well when you know the bike doesn't give you a chance,” he admitted.
The 2027 season will be a new chapter for Joan Mir with Gresini Racing. Will he be able to bounce back and fight at the front? We'll wait and see.
