Former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe has issued a stern warning to Racing Bulls, stating that dropping Liam Lawson could severely hurt the development of their driver lineup heading into the 2027 season. The New Zealand racer is currently still awaiting official confirmation regarding his future as the Faenza-based squad continues to weigh its options for the upcoming championship.

While Arvid Lindblad is widely anticipated to retain his seat following a strong rookie campaign, the identity of his teammate remains an open question. Alongside Lawson, Formula 2 title contender Nikola Tsolov has also emerged as a potential candidate for the drive. However, Hinchcliffe believes that fielding such an inexperienced pairing would create a distinct disadvantage for both young talents trying to navigate the complexities of Formula 1.

Drawing comparisons to his own entry into top-tier single-seater racing, Hinchcliffe emphasized the invaluable benefit of having a seasoned benchmark inside the garage. "I was a rookie in IndyCar, I had a very experienced teammate, a decade, maybe 11 years already under his belt in Oriol Servia," Hinchcliffe told the F1 Nation podcast. He noted that working with less seasoned drivers later in his career proved that learning strictly from peers with minimal experience drastically slows down rookie progression.

Hinchcliffe pointed out that Lindblad has clearly benefited from working alongside Lawson, whose approach mirrors someone with significantly more tenure in the series. He also highlighted that Lawson himself has yet to complete a full, uninterrupted season with the same F1 team from start to finish due to his various reserve and substitute roles. "Putting a rookie in beside Lindblad stunts his development, and then for Tsolov, you're learning off a driver with one year of experience. Both drivers, I think, suffer in that situation," he explained.

Lawson has enjoyed a standout campaign, currently on course to finish ninth in the drivers' standings as the absolute leader outside of the top four dominant constructors. With points finishes secured across 13 of the 18 rounds held so far, plus his strong performances standing in for the injured Isack Hadjar earlier in the year, Hinchcliffe insists the decision to delay his retention defies logic. "It blows me away that they haven't already," he concluded, adding that not re-signing the Kiwi talent would constitute absolute madness.
