Istanbul Park, the circuit famous for its iconic Turn 8, is preparing for Formula 1's return in 2027 with a promise of significant changes. After being absent since 2021, the track now has a five-year deal marking a new chapter. The president of the Turkish Automobile Federation (TOSFED), Eren Uclertopragi, revealed that modernisation work is underway, from expanding the paddock to improving infrastructure.
"We are expanding the paddock, so the capacity will be doubled. The infrastructure will be done from scratch – beginning from race control and expanding to the surrounding roads," Uclertopragi told The Race. A key priority is enhancing fan experience, with grandstand renovations and expansive fan zones. Additionally, premium hospitality areas around Turn 8 will be upgraded to meet modern F1 standards.
Traffic issues that were once a complaint in the past are also being addressed. Uclertopragi emphasised that traffic management and new road construction have been planned to improve access to the circuit. "We want to prioritise the fan experience, which starts with traffic control and management. The surrounding roads have been constructed in a new way to make sure traffic flow is much better," he added.
Turkey's return to the F1 calendar in 2020 and 2021 was marred by a highly slippery track surface, caused by last-minute resurfacing. Some drivers compared it to racing on an ice rink. However, for 2027, organisers promise not to repeat the same mistake. Remedial efforts have been made, including water blasting to clean the surface.
With these major changes, Istanbul Park aims to become a long-term fixture on the F1 calendar. Government support and better promotion are key. If all goes well, the Turkish Grand Prix could once again become a favourite race in the 2027 season.
