Former Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has issued a stark warning about the potential arrival of Christian Horner at Ferrari. In an interview with Sky Italy, Arrivabene suggested that Horner's past success could be more of a disadvantage than an advantage for the Scuderia.
The speculation was ignited after Horner, who was fired by Red Bull midway through 2025, described joining Ferrari as "the dream" in an interview with The Times over the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend. His comments have intensified rumors about the future of current team boss Fred Vasseur.
Arrivabene, who led Ferrari from 2014 to 2019, knows the pressure cooker environment at Maranello all too well. He believes that one man cannot change everything. "At Ferrari, one man can't change anything," he said. "For Horner to come to Ferrari with all the titles he's won could be more of a disadvantage than an advantage, because it would raise even greater expectations. On top of that, they'd have to start all over again."
The Italian highlighted the departure of key Ferrari engineers such as Simone Resta, Lorenzo Sassi, Enrico Cardile, and Andrea Stella, who now work for rival teams. "Ferrari no longer has engineers of that calibre. Everything has to be rebuilt. Ferrari needs calm and a leader who can work freely. These two things can solve many problems. But it is not a single person, however successful, who can solve the problems."
Arrivabene also questioned whether Vasseur has free rein. "I don't know if he has free rein or not," he added. "If so, then some reflection is needed. It's crucial to give the team some peace and quiet now, and that's not easy at Ferrari. When you join Ferrari's racing department, you're under enormous pressure. You have to let the team work in peace."
Despite his caution, Arrivabene acknowledged the progress Ferrari has made this year. "They made significant progress, at least until recently. It's not as simple as it looks. It's not enough to just bring in the 'big man' who's already won everything. As a fan and former Ferrari employee, I say – let's not raise false expectations."
His warning underscores the complexity of Ferrari's internal dynamics. With Vasseur's position uncertain and Horner available, speculation will continue. But if Arrivabene is to be believed, Ferrari needs more than a big name—they need stability and patience to rebuild their glory days.
