Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert believes Lando Norris and McLaren will be the biggest threat to Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes in the second half of the 2025 season. According to him, McLaren has shown the most significant progress heading into the summer break, ahead of Ferrari and Red Bull.
Herbert, now an analyst, highlighted that McLaren broke their victory drought in Hungary and plans to complete their upgrade package at Zandvoort and Baku. This puts the Woking-based team in a strong position to challenge for the world championship.
"If I were in Antonelli's and Mercedes' shoes, my main concern right now would be McLaren," Herbert told Casinostugan. "Ahead of the break, they seem to have made the most significant progress and are in a really good position."
Herbert added that McLaren's return to title contention would be a real test for Antonelli and Mercedes. "It would be great to see McLaren back in the fight for the drivers' championship with Lando Norris. Then we'd see how Antonelli and Mercedes handle the pressure; there could be another twist in this season," he said.
With the second half set to begin in the Netherlands, the competition is expected to intensify. McLaren, with their developing car, could become a serious challenger to Mercedes' dominance, which so far has been underpinned by Antonelli's consistent performances.
