Heavy rain that drenched the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on Thursday (17/9) has forced teams and riders to rethink their approach ahead of the Austrian GP 2026. The extreme conditions not only soaked the track but also washed away all rubber laid down in previous sessions, creating a completely clean surface that could alter the competitive order.
The phenomenon known as a green track will be the dominant factor in Friday's first free practice (FP1). Without a rubber layer, the asphalt loses its natural grip, while air temperatures dropping to 8–14 degrees Celsius slow front tyre warming. Riders will need to be extra cautious, especially in the early stages when the track is still wet or damp.
For teams, this presents a technical challenge. Mechanics must prepare emergency setups if the circuit is not fully dry when FP1 begins. Tyre choice, pressures, and weight distribution become crucial to compensate for the loss of traction. Teams that can read the conditions quickly will gain a significant advantage.
From a manufacturer perspective, KTM is expected to benefit from the low-grip nature of the track. The RC16 is known to be responsive to changing conditions, and riders like Brad Binder or Pedro Acosta could seize the moment to set the fastest time. Conversely, Ducati, which usually dominates the long straights of the Red Bull Ring, must find a way to maintain rear tyre traction on the clean asphalt.
However, weather forecasts indicate a significant improvement over the weekend. The Sprint Race on Saturday and the Main Race on Sunday are predicted to be dry with temperatures warming up to 24 degrees Celsius. This means the results of FP1 and FP2 will be crucial for riders aiming to secure a direct spot in Q2 without going through Q1.
With these dynamics, the Austrian GP 2026 could deliver surprises right from practice. Quick adaptation and strategic decisions in the opening minutes of FP1 could be the difference between riders who progress smoothly and those who fall behind in the competition.
