Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 Formula 1 world champion, has weighed in on what he describes as a "strange" dynamic between Ferrari teammates Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. According to Villeneuve, the internal tension at Maranello has reached a worrying level and could jeopardize team harmony.
The intra-team relationship has been a hot topic throughout the 2026 season, especially after a flashpoint on the opening lap of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Ferrari has refused to designate Hamilton as its number one driver, keeping both on equal terms despite warnings from observers that this approach could derail their already slim championship hopes.
Villeneuve believes the fierce desire of Hamilton and Leclerc to beat each other has created underlying tension. "If you look at the two Ferrari drivers, they react very strongly to being beaten by their teammate, much more than any other team—it's like the end of the world," he told Sky Sports F1.
"It seems to me to be more important to be ahead of your teammate than on pole. It's really a strange balance they have internally, it's an internal battle. It's really strong and it really affects them—you can see both of them go down, go up, just by being ahead of their teammate," Villeneuve added.
Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya echoed these sentiments and feels another coming together between Hamilton and Leclerc is inevitable. "They're going to get together again for sure. They're not going to give each other an inch," Montoya said on F1 TV. "Charles needs to give Lewis a lot of room once, and Lewis is going to go, 'OK, because I was fair to you and you were not fair to me. Now you need to really show me you want to play. You need to earn that respect back.' And if he doesn't, then Lewis is going to be all out."
Leclerc, who qualified second for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after benefiting from a tow from Hamilton, claimed Ferrari is unfairly scrutinized. "I've been with Ferrari since 2019 and I know everything we do is overanalyzed, over-discussed, and very often the conclusions taken are wrong. We only need to speak with Lewis," he said. "We both want to win and there's competition. But we also want to win as a team and make Ferrari come out on top. That is the priority. I enjoy fighting with Lewis and that's what is exciting in Formula 1."
With the season intensifying, how Ferrari manages this tension will determine whether they can challenge for the title or stumble due to internal strife.
