George Russell admitted he was lucky at the end of the British GP 2026 after the safety car helped him secure his first podium at Silverstone.

The Mercedes driver suffered a mid-race slow puncture, forcing him into a second pit stop and dropping him out of the direct fight for third place. At that stage, Russell’s podium chances looked significantly reduced.

However, Russell was able to recover in the closing stages. The decisive moment came when the safety car was deployed, with second-placed Lewis Hamilton choosing to pit while Russell stayed out.

That decision promoted Russell to second and delivered an 18-point haul. The result also cut Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead to 25 points after Antonelli lost his points finish following a wheel shield failure and a five-second track-limits penalty.

“It is my first podium, so really pleased to be standing here,” Russell said.

“It was obviously unlucky to get the puncture, and then I got very lucky at the end with the safety car, I was glad.”

Russell admitted he was in a vulnerable position on tyres after not pitting under the safety car. With tyre temperatures dropping, a restart would have carried major risk, making him relieved that the race did not resume under green-flag conditions.

“It would have been great for the fans for it to have restarted, but from my side, the tyres were so cold, so I was kind of glad to just bring it home in second,” he added.

“A tough weekend, but overall glad to be standing there.”

The podium is an important result for Russell after a race shaped by a puncture, pit-stop decisions, and the late safety car. With the gap to Antonelli reduced, the Silverstone result gives Russell renewed momentum in Mercedes’ internal fight and the championship battle heading into the next round.
