American rider Garrett Gerloff faced major frustration after committing the exact same error on consecutive laps during the Superpole race at the 2026 WorldSBK round in Estoril. Despite securing solid top-ten finishes in the main races throughout the Portuguese weekend, this glaring miscue in the sprint event left him deeply disappointed with his own execution on the track.
Entering the final rounds of the 2026 Superbike World Championship season, Gerloff's ninth position in the standings has already comfortably surpassed his previous year's performance when he finished 15th. With the championship gaps ahead and behind him being relatively stable, his position is secure, yet the competitive drive of the Texan always demands perfection during every single racing weekend.
The weekend at the Estoril circuit started on a steady note as he crossed the finish line 10th in the opening long race before improving to a strong seventh place in race two. During the first encounter, he engaged in tough battles alongside competitors like Xavi Vierge and Sam Lowes, explaining that starting further down the grid made his progression through the field a challenging task.

"In the first heat I felt I had good pace and everything, but starting a bit further back made it simply difficult to work my way forward. I had a good fight with Xavi Vierge and Sam Lowes, so overall I rode as well as I could and a top-ten place is what we have to settle for," Gerloff described regarding his opening race performance.
His comfort level increased significantly during the final race on Sunday as his machine handled exceptionally well under his guidance. Gerloff expressed genuine satisfaction with claiming a spot inside the top seven because the bike felt right in his hands, allowing him to extract the absolute maximum potential available from the weekend package.
"But with the second race I was really happy. I felt good, the motorcycle handled really well in my hands. I was glad to be in the top seven, there was nothing more to be had this weekend," he added.
However, the 31-year-old's weekend was severely marred by a disastrous Superpole sprint race where he could only manage an 18th-place finish, tying with Assen race two as his worst result of the entire 2026 campaign. A missed braking point on lap one sent him wide, and an identical mistake on the second lap compounded his misery.
"I am really disappointed with myself from the Superpole Race. I hoped we could get into the top nine, but on the first lap I didn't brake optimally into turn 1, came off the line and had to go off-track—and then the exact same thing happened to me on the second lap and I could kick myself in the butt for it!" Gerloff concluded.
