Chip Ganassi didn't waste any time making it clear that his decision to sign Christian Lundgaard was about more than just lap times. In a candid conversation with the media, the veteran team owner emphasized that character and personal values are what he looks for first in a driver. "I want to know what they're made of, what their values are," he said, offering a glimpse into the philosophy that has built one of IndyCar's most storied organizations.
Lundgaard, a 25-year-old Dane, will embark on his sixth IndyCar season in 2027, stepping into the legendary #9 seat. He'll have to adapt to a new culture meticulously crafted by Mike Hull and his crew over the years. Ganassi admitted that his initial meetings with Lundgaard were intense, even going as far as saying he "grilled" the young driver about expectations and priorities. "I don't get into the technical side—setup, springs, that sort of thing. I want to know who they are," he added.
But make no mistake: performance still matters. Lundgaard's two wins this season—coming right as he hit free agency—certainly boosted his stock. Critics have pointed out that his oval racing could use improvement, with only one of his 16 podiums coming on an oval. Yet Ganassi was quick to defend his new signing. "I remember that podium at Milwaukee. He beat all three of our guys there. So I'm not overly concerned," he explained.
This move signals a new chapter for the Indianapolis-based team. The #9 car, previously driven by some of the biggest names in the sport, now belongs to Lundgaard, who is seen as a clinical, studious racer. "He seems like a student of the craft," Ganassi praised. "I'm confident our system will continue to develop him both on and off the track."
For Lundgaard, this is a golden opportunity to prove he belongs among IndyCar's elite. Joining a powerhouse like Ganassi brings immediate pressure, but with a team owner who prioritizes personal values, he has a solid foundation for success.
Lundgaard's first race with CGR will be the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 7. The streets of Florida will host his debut, and it will be the first real test of whether the chemistry built off-track translates into on-track results.
