Adrien Fourmaux made a strong start to the rally, sitting third overall after Friday's opening two stages. Then came the first puncture, dropping the Hyundai driver to seventh. Spurred on by that setback, he set three consecutive fastest times before suffering two punctures on the penultimate stage of the day.
“I'm very, very happy with my driving and the pace I had on the stages. It's just a real shame. We have really weak tyres and three of them delaminated. It's a real shame,” said the Hyundai driver, his frustration evident.
Fourmaux strongly criticised the tyre situation. “If you hit a rock or something else, or the tyre wears too much and punctures, you can understand that. But when the tyres delaminate, it's a very big issue. Anyway, there's nothing else I can say. I'm just happy with how I managed the situation.”
He then offered a striking analogy. “It's just a shame what happened to the tyres. It's like playing at a casino. Luckily, I didn't play at the casino, because I would have lost all my money.”
Fourmaux is nearly two minutes behind rally leader Sami Pajari, but he remains hopeful. “I would say everything is still possible. We are fourth and it's not so bad. Things can happen ahead of us, and we can be on the podium and maybe even in the lead. With the rain, I would say anything can happen.”
Heavy rain is forecast for the area, which could make conditions extremely challenging. “It's going to be a nightmare. I said last year: if it rains all weekend, it's going to be a properly difficult rally,” he concluded.
