Formula 1 is set to return to the African continent after nearly four decades, as Rwanda becomes the chosen venue for a brand-new Grand Prix circuit, marking a massive milestone for the global motorsport series.
The sport last raced on African soil at Kyalami during the 1993 season. Ever since that historic weekend, a return of the African Grand Prix has remained one of the most highly requested and anticipated additions to the championship calendar by fans and drivers alike.
Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has consistently been the biggest proponent of returning to Africa, and it now appears that concrete plans to realize this ambition are finally falling into place.

As reports indicate, an agreement has been successfully reached between the necessary stakeholders to host an Formula 1 race near the Rwandan capital city of Kigali. Rwandan President Paul Kagame has been remarkably vocal about his vision, culminating when Kigali hosted the FIA General Assemblies and Prize Giving Ceremony in 2024.
With Kyalami currently standing as the only erstwhile venue capable of hosting, Rwanda is moving forward with plans to build a state-of-the-art permanent racing circuit near Bugesera International Airport. Former F1 driver and acclaimed circuit designer Alex Wurz is reportedly steering the layout design for the ambitious project.
