The Australian motorsport community is mourning the loss of former Peter Brock co-driver and national champion Troy Dunstan, who has passed away at the age of 64. According to Speedcafe, he lost his battle with cancer, following the tragic passing of his wife Wendy earlier this year. Dunstan leaves behind an enduring legacy as a fiercely talented driver, brilliant mechanic, and respected figure in the paddock.

Hailing from the Gold Coast, Troy Dunstan developed his passion for racing through his uncle, leading Australian touring car driver Charlie O’Brien. This early exposure sparked a dedication that saw him carve out a successful path through the junior open-wheel ranks before stepping up to powerhouse touring car squads in the early 1990s.

Dunstan etched his name into the history books by claiming the 1991 Australian Formula Ford Championship with the Speedtech team, established in partnership with Terry Morris. That monumental single-seater success paved the way for touring car opportunities with Advantage Racing, most notably sharing the #05 Mobil Commodore with Peter Brock at the 1992 Sandown 500.

Tributes have poured in from across the motorsport landscape. Reflecting on his career, Charlie O’Brien told Speedcafe, "I think he was totally underrated as a driver. He had an incredible toughness and it was good to see him get a couple of breaks after his success in Formula Ford, but he probably deserved more."

Former teammate Paul Morris also remembered Dunstan's unique character and immense talent. "Troy is the only bloke I knew that could drink 20 rum and cokes, wake up the next morning, eat a pie, have a smoke and then go out and win a motor race!" Paul Morris recalled. Dunstan's multifaceted brilliance as both a driver and a master mechanic ensures his memory will live on.
