Formula 1, Sportrik Media - The FIA has confirmed that the pit lane speed limit for the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park Circuit will remain at 80 km/h for the 2026 Formula 1 season opener.
Earlier this week, reports suggested the speed limit would be reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h to manage increased pit lane congestion following the arrival of Cadillac as the 11th team on the Formula 1 grid. Australian GP chief events officer Tom Mottram had indicated the reduction could serve as a temporary measure to accommodate additional traffic.
However, the governing body has since clarified that the change will not be implemented for the Melbourne race weekend. As a result, teams will continue to operate under the standard 80 km/h pit lane speed limit throughout practice, qualifying, and the grand prix.
The decision carries strategic importance for teams, as pit lane speed directly influences the time lost during pit stops. A lower speed limit would have significantly increased the time required for pit visits, potentially altering race strategies and the number of stops teams might consider during the race.
The 2026 Australian Grand Prix also marks the beginning of a new technical era in Formula 1 following the introduction of updated regulations overseen by the FIA. The changes impact aerodynamic philosophy, power unit efficiency, and overall car design as the championship enters a new competitive phase.
