The Sepang International Circuit played host to a major surprise during qualifying as Fernando Alonso and his teammate delivered a stellar double-Q2 appearance for Aston Martin. The Silverstone squad managed to defy expectations despite grappling with a noticeable power deficit throughout the ongoing championship campaign.
Securing a season-best 12th place on the grid, with Lance Stroll right behind in 14th, offered a much-needed morale boost for the outfit. Yet, the veteran Spaniard was quick to downplay the long-term significance of the Saturday breakthrough, insisting that the underlying performance limitations of their package remain a stark reality.
High-speed tracks have traditionally exposed the weaknesses of the current aerodynamic and power unit configuration. However, the AMR26 found surprising pace in Malaysia, comfortably clearing the benchmark set by newer competitors at the back of the grid during the tightly contested session.

Looking ahead to the grand prix, Alonso warned that defending their track position will be an uphill battle due to vulnerable straight-line speeds and faster cars starting further down the order with grid penalties.
"We are less competitive, and I think so far it has been a good Saturday for us, but we need to have our feet on the ground," Alonso told media including Motorsport Week, highlighting the sheer difficulty of fighting off quicker rivals without sufficient straight-line velocity.
