Feeney Mustang Hit by Last-Minute Engine Issue at Test

Broc Feeney narrowly avoided an engine failure on the final lap of Tuesday's pre-enduro test at Queensland Raceway. The #88 Red Bull Mustang lost power while Feeney was at the wheel, but he managed to shut it down quickly enough to prevent catastrophic damage.

Despite the engine not blowing up, metal shavings were found in the oil filter once the car returned to the garage, prompting an overnight engine change. Broc Feeney will run a fresh V8 for Wednesday's ride day, while the damaged unit will be sent back to Triple Eight's engine shop for detailed analysis.

Triple Eight team manager Mark Dutton explained that the car's data showed no obvious signs of trouble. "The vitals on the data looked fine, except it seemed to lose a little power. There's a little bit of metal in the filter, so we need to understand what went wrong," he told Speedcafe.

Dutton praised Feeney's awareness. "Broc was really good, he felt it straight away and backed out. If he had kept driving it might have done more damage to the engine. When an engine doesn't catastrophically let go, 90 percent of the time you can save half of it, that's a big cost saving," he said.

This is the third issue for a Ford engine during the extended stay at Queensland Raceway. Earlier, Rylan Gray suffered a locked exhaust cam, requiring an engine change between sprints. Matt Payne was also denied the Sprint Cup due to a drivetrain failure.

As the supplier of Ford engines, Dutton admits there is concern heading into the endurance races. "There's always concern any time you have mechanical issues, let alone an engine one. A thorough analysis will come to determine the cause," he added.
