Max Verstappen once again asserted his dominance at Sepang International Circuit, setting the fastest time in the second free practice session (FP2) of the 2026 Malaysian Grand Prix. The session, held on Friday, October 2, was a crucial opportunity for teams to conduct race simulations with high fuel loads, offering a clearer picture of their true pace ahead of Sunday's race.
In FP1 earlier, Verstappen had already led the way ahead of George Russell, Isack Hadjar, and Charles Leclerc. But the second session was the real test as teams shifted focus to long runs to evaluate tyre degradation and performance consistency. Mercedes, bringing a substantial upgrade package, appeared to struggle in race pace simulations with full fuel, though Russell still managed to stay close in second place.
The Sepang International Circuit, known for its challenging heat and fast corners, provided the perfect laboratory for engineers to gather data. Ferrari and Charles Leclerc were also in the mix, continuously searching for the ideal setup to match Red Bull's speed. Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar, impressive in FP1, aimed to maintain his momentum.

The 2026 Malaysian GP itself replaces the cancelled Bahrain GP from April, adding another layer of drama to an already unpredictable season. Fans are hopeful for tighter competition, especially with the return of this legendary circuit to the Formula 1 calendar.
With FP2 results in, Verstappen remains the favourite, but the race pace simulations show that Mercedes and Ferrari cannot be underestimated. Tomorrow's qualifying will determine who is truly ready to seize pole position at Sepang.
