Elfyn Evans is keeping a level head as he approaches the decisive Rally Sardinia, where he could finally clinch his first WRC title. The Welshman has been runner-up five times, and now he stands on the brink of ending that drought. Elfyn Evans remains focused amid the pressure.
His journey to this point has been anything but easy. Two bitter defeats came in 2020 against Sebastien Ogier and last season, where he fell short at the final hurdle. Six years ago in Monza, he led the championship into the finale but went off the road and saw his chance slip away. Now, with maturity on his side, he is ready to face the challenge.
Ahead of perhaps the most important rally of his career, Evans sticks to a familiar mantra. “Our approach for Sardinia doesn’t change just because it’s the last rally of the season: we have to go there and have the best rally that we can,” he said. “We’ve worked hard to put ourselves in this position, holding on to the lead through a difficult run of gravel rallies.”
Evans will once again be first on the road. Road sweeping is particularly significant in Sardinia, so he cannot expect an easy task. “Sardinia is usually not an easy rally to open the road on, and although we might be more likely to see some rain at this time of year, which could help reduce the cleaning effect for us, we have to prepare for a demanding event like usual,” he added.
The competition remains tight. Sami Pajari and Oliver Solberg still have a mathematical chance, especially with big points available on Sunday. “Sami and Oliver have been driving well, and with so many points still available, especially on Sunday, we know things will most likely remain open until the end. We just need to drive it like a normal rally and focus on doing the best job we can,” Evans concluded.
Rally Sardinia begins on Thursday with 17 special stages covering approximately 307 kilometres. It’s not just a test of speed, but also of mental strength and strategy. For Evans, this is a chance to prove he can hold his nerve until the finish and lift the trophy that has eluded him for so long.
