Red Bull Ring always delivers fierce battles, and the 2026 edition was no exception. But this time, cold track temperatures—just 16°C—became the main ingredient that shifted the competitive order. Ducati, usually dominant, struggled, while Aprilia and KTM showed their teeth.
Marc Marquez didn't hesitate to highlight the rear tyre performance. “We have to work on this, luckily there's only one more race in Indonesia,” he said. However, a deeper look reveals the issue wasn't just the tyre construction. Michelin brought the same casing as Austria 2025, when Ducati was still mighty. The big difference was track temperature, which dropped from 32°C to 16°C.
Although air temperature was nearly identical (24°C vs 23°C), the cold asphalt made it hard for tyres to reach their ideal operating window. As a result, grip decreased and tyre management became trickier. Riders had to be smoother on the throttle, especially through fast corners like Turns 6 and 9.
The impact was clear in the lap times. Pedro Acosta won with a total time of 42:16.996, about 6 seconds slower than Marquez's 2025 winning time. Interestingly, Acosta's time was only 0.874 seconds faster than Marquez's fourth-place time last year. This shows how much track conditions affect performance.
For Ducati, this result is a wake-up call. They must find solutions to stay competitive in cold conditions, especially ahead of the Indonesian round which could have different characteristics. Meanwhile, Aprilia and KTM seemed increasingly comfortable with the harder tyre, proving that adaptation is key in this ultra-competitive era.
With only one race left, will Ducati bounce back or will their rivals close in? We'll find out on track.
