The Moto2 Aragon Grand Prix was not an easy weekend for David Alonso. But, as often happens with great riders, he managed to turn adversity into a podium. The Colombian from the Aspar Team, who seemed lost on Friday, fought back to finish third in a race that proved patience and faith in hard work are as important as speed.
“At the beginning, I didn't even know where my pace was because I was very lost on Friday. But as the race went on, at the points where I was losing the most, I lost less and less. I kept improving during the race,” Alonso explained to Mario Bordonaba from Motosan.es.
The key to his comeback, according to the rider, was not repeating past mistakes. “At Silverstone I had three different bikes over the weekend and it was the worst experience. When I got here, I felt the same as at Silverstone and I said, ‘don't touch anything’. I'll find my own way.”
That decision was crucial. Instead of making drastic changes to the bike, Alonso trusted the team and believed the feeling would come naturally. “Unlike Silverstone, I didn't look for a quick solution at any point. I just had faith and worked with the team, letting things come little by little. That's what gave me this result today: not getting nervous and staying on the path until things work out.”
The reward was a podium decided in the final meters. Alonso, who had climbed from fifth place in the first half of the race, entered the last lap with a chance to be second. “At the corner before Sacacorchos, I slid a bit. That gave me the chance. It was a tricky place, but I thought if it was tricky, it was easier to surprise because he wouldn't expect it. I tried and it almost worked.”
In the end, the podium was decided by just 81 milliseconds, and Alonso took third place, which felt like a victory. “I was very close to the win, and given where we came from, I'm very happy.”
This podium, his eighth in Moto2, allows him to continue climbing the overall standings. Alonso, who has already signed to race in MotoGP with Honda in 2027, showed in Aragon that his talent is unwavering. “It tells you not to stress. For whatever reason, you come in not feeling great, but you don't need to worry.”
