Dani Sordo has sent ripples through the WRC paddock with a bold decision ahead of Rally Sardinia, the final round of the Rally1 era. The Spanish veteran has opted for Patricia Saiz as his co-driver, replacing Candido Carrera who has partnered him this season. The move raised eyebrows, especially since Saiz has never competed at WRC level.
For Sordo, this is more than just a navigator swap. Saiz's impressive performances in five previous national rallies convinced him. "She is so clear with the pace notes, which really helps me focus," Sordo said. That confidence has led him to set a podium target, even a win, on terrain he knows well.
Sordo is no stranger to Sardinia. He has won there twice and considers the rough gravel roads of the Italian island one of his favourites. "The biggest challenge is the narrow roads and the stones by the side," he explained. "In Sardinia, you need to be precise and fast. If you make a small mistake, there's always a stone waiting for you."
This season has not been smooth for Sordo. His best result is seventh at Rally Islas Canarias. Yet he refuses to dwell on setbacks. "I'm really motivated for Rally Sardinia. Sardinia gives me a special energy," he added. That motivation fuels his belief that he can be competitive even with a new co-driver.
Rally Sardinia will decide the world championship. Three Toyota drivers—Elfyn Evans, Sami Pajari, and Oliver Solberg—are locked in a tight battle for the crown. Sordo's presence among them could be crucial, especially if he can finish strongly and steal valuable points.
The rally kicks off on Friday on Sardinia's gravel roads, with shakedown on Thursday morning. Sordo and Saiz will face technical terrain that demands perfect communication. If successful, it could be a sweet ending to the Rally1 era and a new beginning for the Spanish duo.
