Colapinto Handed Extra Grid Penalty for F1 Bahrain GP 2026

Franco Colapinto is facing an additional grid penalty at the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia after taking a fifth Mercedes V6 engine this season. The Alpine driver was already set for a five-place drop due to a collision in Baku, and now must serve a further 10-place penalty, bringing his total to 15 places and likely forcing him to start from the back row.

The initial penalty stemmed from an incident in Azerbaijan involving Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris. As a result, Colapinto had to take a five-place grid drop at Sepang. However, with his starting position already compromised and points difficult to achieve, Alpine decided to introduce a new Mercedes V6 engine early to minimise damage for the rest of the season. The decision was made because the Argentine driver would start from the back anyway, making the power unit change a strategic move for the long term.

Alpine is currently embroiled in a tight battle with Racing Bulls for fifth place in the constructors' championship. Colapinto's Baku crash was a major blow as Racing Bulls capitalised, extending Alpine's deficit to 15 points. With this penalty, Alpine falls further behind in their pursuit of their rivals.

Meanwhile, Colapinto's teammate Gasly is also due for a new power unit in the coming races. However, Alpine has not yet decided when to introduce it and take the grid penalty. The decision will depend on the team's strategy to optimise performance for the remainder of the season.

In Malaysia, Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad will also receive a penalty for taking a new engine, turbocharger, and exhaust system, forcing him to start from the back. Meanwhile, Red Bull's Isack Hadjar has been handed a five-place drop after using his seventh V6 engine of the year. This shows that several teams must sacrifice starting positions for long-term gains.

Grid penalties are part of teams' strategies in managing power unit component allocation throughout the season. With regulations limiting the number of units, teams must carefully determine when to make changes to avoid overly compromising their race positions. Alpine hopes this decision will help them bounce back in the remaining races and close the gap to Racing Bulls.
