The Formula 1 race weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez brought a wave of frustration for Charles Leclerc. Having dominated Friday's practice sessions and shown blistering pace in the early stages of Q3, the Monegasque driver was left empty-handed in the fight for pole position, ultimately having to settle for a frustrating third place on the starting grid.
While Leclerc commanded the timesheets during the opening segments of the shootout, it was his teammate Lewis Hamilton who delivered a stunning lap to claim a historic pole position for Scuderia Ferrari. Leclerc missed out on the benchmark time by just 119 thousandths of a second. His body language in the media pen immediately following the session laid bare his intense disappointment after being heavily tipped throughout the paddock to secure the top spot.
"I simply did a lousy job today," Leclerc confessed candidly to reporters after stepping out of the cockpit. "The out-laps were extremely tricky, trying to bring the tires into the optimal operating window. That was my biggest problem today."

Although tire preparation improved toward the very end of Q3, an unexpected shift in the car's handling threw off his rhythm completely. Refusing to hide behind excuses, the Ferrari charger pointed out that his teammate's success proved the machinery was entirely capable of converting speed into a pole position.
"At the end of Q3 the tire warm-up phase was fine, but suddenly the car felt completely different in terms of handling, I don't know why. But that cannot be an excuse, because Lewis proved that the Ferrari is fast enough for pole," he explained.
History shows that starting from third at the Mexican venue is far from a disadvantage. Since the Grand Prix returned to the calendar, P3 has frequently served as a springboard to victory, a feat achieved by Hamilton in 2019 and Max Verstappen in both 2021 and 2023. Yet, those statistics provided little comfort in the immediate aftermath of the session.
"I have to admit I am disappointed. Starting from P3 here is not that bad though, especially being on the clean side of the grid," Leclerc concluded, turning his focus toward race day strategy.
