Carlo Luzzi may not be a household name, but the Italian engineer has a unique paddock story. He worked with Colin Edwards in 2007, then guided Jorge Lorenzo, Casey Stoner, and Marc Marquez at Honda. On the Atutogaz podcast, he shared a fascinating comparison of the three world champions he has worked with.
Luzzi considers himself fortunate to witness firsthand the difference between fast riders and true champions. “I was very lucky, because when you work with these riders, you can perceive the difference between a champion and a very good rider,” he said. From there, he identified each one's unique traits: Lorenzo with incredible determination, Stoner with pure talent, and Marquez as a combination of both.
Lorenzo's Unwavering Determination
Luzzi knew Lorenzo from the early days of the Mallorcan's MotoGP career. For him, Lorenzo's main strength was his boundless conviction and determination. “Jorge Lorenzo, I met him at the beginning, he had infinite conviction. An incredible determination,” he recalled. He often saw Lorenzo trying desperately to close the gap to rivals, even when the technical conditions were not in his favor. “Sometimes we saw differences between him and Valentino, and he did everything possible to close them. Even when the tires were different, you couldn't do the same as the other.” Although those efforts sometimes ended in a crash, Lorenzo's spirit never faded. “The will and determination to reach the goal never disappeared.”
Stoner, Pure Talent That's Hard to Explain
Unlike Lorenzo, Casey Stoner represented pure talent for Luzzi. “Stoner is an incredible talent, a pure talent,” he stated. Luzzi explained that true talent is not just about speed, but the relationship between the result and the effort required. “Talent, what we can measure here, you see in the relationship between the result and the effort.” Stoner, he added, did not need to spend hours understanding the technical details of the bike to achieve extraordinary results. “He wasn't interested in talking to the technicians, trying to understand how to improve the bike.” Even his comments after getting off the bike could be quite blunt, though Luzzi did not elaborate further.
Marquez: The Perfect Blend of Two Characters
From that comparison, Luzzi concluded that Marc Marquez is the synthesis of Stoner's brilliance and Lorenzo's determination. “Marc is a sum between Casey's talent and Jorge's determination,” he said. This combination made Marquez so dominant, especially during his golden era with Honda. However, Luzzi also highlighted that Marquez has his own uniqueness in reading races and taking risks. He doesn't just imitate; he blends natural instinct with calculated hard work.
For the team, having a rider with Marquez's character has a huge impact. They are not only fast but also able to motivate every team member with their work ethic and sharp technical feedback. Luzzi said that working with champions like them changed his perspective on racing. “You learn that winning is not just about the bike, but also about mentality and character,” he added.
To this day, Luzzi's story is a reminder that behind every championship title lies a unique combination of talent, determination, and human connection with the team. And for Marquez, being labeled as a blend of Stoner and Lorenzo is the highest praise from an engineer who has seen it all from inside the garage.
