Cal Crutchlow has been confirmed to continue with LCR Honda at the 2026 German MotoGP at the Sachsenring, extending his role as replacement for Johann Zarco while the French rider recovers from serious knee ligament injuries.

Crutchlow came out of retirement after Zarco was injured in an accident at Catalunya. According to a report by Peter McLaren updated on July 1, 2026, Zarco has not yet undergone surgery because of the continuing risk of infection. The situation has prompted LCR Honda to retain Crutchlow for at least the German round on July 10-12.

Crutchlow has yet to score a point across his four appearances since returning to the grid. However, the Assen weekend provided evidence of relative progress when the 40-year-old qualified ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu before finishing the Sprint directly behind wildcard rider Augusto Fernandez.

Those results have not yet delivered a significant competitive gain for LCR Honda, but they indicate that Crutchlow is gradually readjusting to the demands of the motorcycle and the rhythm of MotoGP competition after a prolonged absence from full-time racing. The Sachsenring will provide a different test, with the team requiring technical stability and useful development feedback while a points finish remains the clearest measure of the substitution’s effectiveness.

Zarco acknowledged that he has begun to miss his team, motorcycle and racing environment after a month of recovery. However, he stressed that surgery cannot be brought forward while the infection risk remains. The Frenchman also explained that the strengthening work completed before the operation should support the subsequent rehabilitation process.

“As long as there is a risk of infection, I cannot risk having surgery,” Zarco wrote on social media.

The Sachsenring event is the final MotoGP round before the summer break. The championship will then resume at Silverstone, Crutchlow’s home event. Should Zarco remain unfit, LCR Honda could again retain the British rider, although any further decision will depend on the timing of Zarco’s surgery and the progress of his recovery.
