The Cadillac Formula 1 team has made it clear that it is not considering a sale, following a federal investigation into TWG Global CEO Mark Walter in the United States. The firm statement came during Media Day at the Dutch Grand Prix, putting an end to growing speculation.
The issue stems from a Wall Street Journal report revealing that Mark Walter, who also owns stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lakers, and Chelsea, is being probed by US prosecutors and regulators over alleged fraudulent loans totaling $16 billion. The loans were made through Delaware life insurers tied to Walter and his company, without proper related-party disclosures.
In response, a TWG spokesperson stated that “Mark Walter and TWG have always acted in good faith,” and are confident that “these matters will be resolved favourably.” However, the investigation fueled rumors that Walter might start divesting assets, including a potential sale of the Cadillac F1 team. Speculation intensified after reports emerged that Walter had begun selling parts of his Lakers stake.
Cadillac quickly moved to quash the rumors. In an official statement released at Zandvoort, the team asserted: “TWG is not considering sales of the Cadillac team or any other part of TWG Motorsport.” This statement effectively calmed fears about the future of the team, which is in its debut F1 season.
Interestingly, Cadillac CEO Dan Towriss is not present at Zandvoort. Instead, he is with Andretti Autosport at the IndyCar race in Washington. In his place, newly appointed team principal Marcin Budkowski is leading the team for the first time this weekend.
While the team is committed to not selling, the situation remains fluid. There is no guarantee that the investigation won't impact the team's operations further. For now, Cadillac is trying to project calm amidst the storm of headlines.
Cadillac's decision to immediately deny the rumors is a strategic move to keep the team focused on track. With a challenging debut season, internal stability is key to ensuring the team can grow and compete in the future.
