Flavio Briatore has shared his thoughts on the delicate driver situation facing Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both vying for supremacy within the team. The Alpine boss knows a thing or two about managing big personalities.
Ferrari started 2026 with the SF-26, a package seen as the closest challenger to the dominant Mercedes W17. Two wins have come so far, one for Leclerc and one for Hamilton, but upgrades from rivals have pushed them down the order. That has led to on-track clashes, most notably at Monza where Leclerc ran Hamilton off at the first chicane.
Briatore, no stranger to such situations, gave his verdict to Corriere della Sera: "Ferrari is competitive, but there's always something missing. Winning a championship is complicated, not least because there are others..."
He added: "As far as I know, they're a bickering pair. Managing two big drivers isn't easy. You just need to make it clear to everyone that the car belongs to the team. It takes responsibility and care. I'd never want to see one of my drivers push the other off the track."
Briatore called for patience and respect for Vasseur's ongoing work. "Solutions come when you know the patient. You have to understand the problem before you can try to fix it. In the meantime, Vasseur's work must be respected; mistakes happen in every team. But a winning Ferrari is an asset for the whole of F1; we're all rooting for that Prancing Horse to some extent."
He also dismissed any notion of taking the top job at Ferrari himself. "It's too late. Even though Ferrari is the lover everyone would like to have. But I've never been close to Maranello; I've always been on the other side of the fence."
With his vast experience, Briatore understands the challenges Vasseur faces. His insights only reaffirm just how tricky the situation at Ferrari is.
