Marco Bezzecchi impressed in MotoGP qualifying at Misano, taking pole position and breaking the lap record. However, in the Sprint race, he had to settle for second after being overtaken by Marc Marquez at the first corner. Nevertheless, the Aprilia rider remains optimistic and sent a clear message: Marquez is hard to beat, but he won't give up easily.
Bezzecchi admitted his race pace wasn't as strong as in qualifying. “I struggled to find rhythm in the race. Honestly, I had some stability issues and the rear was pushing the front too much. I felt better in free practice, and that's happened again this weekend. It's always harder in the early laps. Then I gained confidence and started pushing. A podium is a good result,” he said.
The start was a crucial moment. Bezzecchi didn't think his launch was bad, but Marquez again found a way to prevail at the first braking zone, similar to Aragon. “In Aragon it was probably worse. Marc did well and I wasn't aggressive enough. Here I can't complain about my start; I braked hard and closed the line. I don't want to blame myself; I can only congratulate Marc. I would have liked to make it harder for him,” he added.
After a few laps, Bezzecchi began to feel more comfortable on the Aprilia, especially in terms of stability. However, the gap Marquez had built was already too large to close. “He slowed down and after a few laps I felt better, especially with stability. Before, the bike was harder to handle. That extra traction almost bothered me. It's a shame, because I had felt better in practice. Now it's easy to say with a medium gear everything would have been easier. But I had confidence and kept going,” he explained.
The most obvious difference between the two was in the final sector. Bezzecchi acknowledged Marquez was especially strong in left-hand corners, but knows to win tomorrow he needs to find time all around the track. “Marc is very strong in left corners, especially in the last sector. I need to improve there. But I also need to step up in other sectors. I will analyze the data and try to understand where I can be faster,” he stated.
With this result, Bezzecchi showed he can compete at the highest level, though there's still a gap to challenge Marquez's dominance. The main race on Sunday will be the real test. If he can improve his rhythm and maintain his qualifying performance, an upset is not out of the question.
The MotoGP competition is heating up. Bezzecchi and Aprilia keep showing progress, while Marquez remains the benchmark. We await their actions on the Misano track tomorrow.
