After seven years away from Mount Panorama, Bentley is finally set to make its presence felt at the legendary circuit once again. A privately owned, first-generation Bentley Continental GT3 will join the Bathurst Sportscars and Sedans grid on February 13-15.
The confirmation brings a wave of excitement for endurance racing fans, especially given Bentley's rich history at the Bathurst 12 Hour. In the 2020 edition, M-Sport claimed an outright victory with a second-generation Continental, beating the 59Racing McLaren 720S by more than 40 seconds. However, that proved to be the marque's swan song as the brand subsequently shut down its customer racing program.
This time, Bentley's return is not factory-backed but driven by the Miedecke family, who own an early example of the first-generation car. The move is also facilitated by a rule change that now allows GT3 machinery in the Sports Sedans class, aimed at enticing older cars back into competition.
The news coincided with the announcement of Enthusiast Motor Insurance as the naming rights partner for the Bathurst Sportscars and Sedans. Event director Shane Rudzis expressed his enthusiasm: "This category has become an important part of the Bathurst 12 Hour weekend because it delivers exactly what fans love about Mount Panorama. The addition of the Bentley GT3 is a fantastic story. Bentley has a special place in Bathurst 12 Hour history after its outright victory in 2020, and having the brand back on the Mountain gives fans another iconic car and marque to get excited about."
With the category continuing to evolve, the prospect of seeing a Bentley tackling Mount Panorama again is sure to be a highlight. Organisers are still accepting expressions of interest for potential entrants.
