After more than two decades away, the World Rally Championship (WRC) is finally returning to BBC screens. A three-year deal announced this week will bring the world's premier rally series back to audiences across the UK, reviving memories of legendary moments last enjoyed on free-to-air television back in 2001.
For rally fans in the UK, this is no ordinary news. Imagine watching drivers tackle rocky, snowy, and muddy terrain without a subscription. BBC will broadcast selected live stages, including the Wolf Power Stage at every round, plus 60-minute highlights programmes from each event. Rally Scotland will receive special treatment with extensive live coverage across all four days of competition.
The decision is closely tied to Rally Scotland's return to the WRC calendar next season. The event, known for its forest tracks and unpredictable weather, was a key factor in BBC's decision to dive back into rallying. "The return of Rally Scotland to the WRC calendar is particularly exciting and we look forward to capturing all the thrills and excitement for audiences when it kicks off next year," said Rhuanedd Richards, Director of BBC Nations.
Richards also highlighted that the WRC offers a complete package: elite competition, dramatic locations, and powerful human stories. "This is a fantastic addition to our sports portfolio," she added. The collaboration between BBC Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will pool resources and expertise to deliver world-class coverage.
From the WRC Promoter side, CEO Eric Boullier welcomed the partnership. He described the BBC as one of the UK's most trusted and influential media organisations, with a powerful combination of television, digital, and social platforms. "This marks an important step in our strategy to grow the WRC's reach and visibility in the UK," Boullier said.
Boullier added that the timing couldn't be better with Rally Scotland joining the calendar next year. The UK has a rich rallying history, and BBC's involvement is expected to reconnect with existing fans while introducing the WRC to a new generation.
Beyond television, BBC will provide digital clips, highlights, and additional content across its platforms. This means fans can follow stars like Kalle Rovanpera, Thierry Neuville, and Ott Tanak through various channels, anytime and anywhere.
With free-to-air coverage, the WRC has the potential to reach a wider audience in the UK. This could be a catalyst for boosting rallying's popularity in a country that produced legends like Colin McRae and Richard Burns. Now, the question is how quickly BBC and WRC Promoter can deliver on their promises, and whether this will change the motorsport broadcasting landscape in the UK.
