Rain is forecast to hit all Formula 1 sessions at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia this weekend, according to BBC weather. If it happens, it will mark the first wet session for the 2026 regulation cars.
Throughout the season, rain has threatened but never materialised. The Miami Grand Prix was even moved forward by three hours to avoid thunderstorms, yet the race remained dry. Canada was declared a Rain Hazard race, but it too ended up dry. Sessions in Belgium also dodged the rain.
As a result, 15 race weekends have passed without a single wet session. Only a few teams experienced wet running during the pre-season shakedown in Barcelona. The majority have yet to test the 2026 cars on a wet track.
According to BBC forecasts, rain could affect all five sessions at Sepang International Circuit. Hot and humid conditions are expected throughout, with a risk of thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. Malaysia's weather is notoriously unpredictable and can change in minutes.
Historically, weather has played a huge role in Malaysian Grands Prix. Sepang has been hit by sudden downpours. In 2009, the race was abandoned partway through due to a storm, with half points awarded. In 2012, the race was stopped temporarily because of the weather.
This weekend, the Bahrain GP in Malaysia becomes the third round this season to be declared a heat-hazard race. The status is given when temperatures are forecast to exceed 31C during the race. Heat and rain could combine to challenge teams and drivers.
The last F1 race in Malaysia in 2017 was won by Max Verstappen. Now, with the new 2026 regulations, teams must be ready for anything, including the long-awaited rain.
