Isack Hadjar finally tasted his first podium with Red Bull at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while Franco Colapinto caused chaos that destroyed Alpine's chances. The race at Baku City Circuit delivered drama from teammates colliding to the world champion calling for a driver to be banned.
Colapinto, who showed promise at Monza and Madring, locked both front wheels and hit two cars at once. One of them was his own teammate, Pierre Gasly. He received a 10-second penalty, but since he couldn't serve it, he will take a grid penalty in Sepang. Colapinto took full responsibility for the incident. Several drivers defended him, pointing to tricky tyres, dirty track, and weird power delivery in Baku.
Alpine, who looked set for a double points finish, suffered a double DNF. Gasly called the car "the best race car we've had so far this year," but Colapinto's mistake cost them at least seven points and allowed Arvid Lindblad to take seventh. As a result, Racing Bulls extended their gap over Alpine to 15 points in the fight for fifth in the constructors' standings.
For Red Bull, this double podium was their first since April 21, 2024. Max Verstappen finished second, followed by Hadjar in third. Hadjar admitted it was his cleanest weekend with the team, especially after returning from injury. He was effective in battle, understood team orders, and executed the strategy well. His radio messages even seemed calmer than usual.
McLaren had a tough break at Turn 1. Lando Norris became another victim of the incident involving Colapinto. No further information on Norris's damage was available at the time of writing.
With this result, the battle in both drivers' and constructors' championships heats up. Red Bull shows signs of resurgence, while Alpine must bounce back quickly.
