Audi to Build New F1 Campus in Hinwil, Set for 2030 Finish

Audi has officially announced plans for a new Formula 1 campus in Hinwil, Switzerland. The facility will be developed around the existing factory and is set to become operational in stages from summer 2026, with full completion targeted for 2030. This move underscores the German manufacturer's long-term commitment to the pinnacle of motorsport.

Hinwil is no stranger to racing. Peter Sauber founded his eponymous team there in 1970, before entering F1 in 1993. BMW took over in 2005 and sold it back to Sauber in 2009. Audi then acquired the operation in stages, taking full control in January 2025. Since BMW's departure, the Hinwil facility had been run on a shoestring budget, necessitating substantial investment, particularly to modernise the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) cluster and wind tunnel.

Interestingly, the legendary wind tunnel at Wildbachstrasse was originally funded by money Sauber received from Mercedes to release Kimi Raikkonen to McLaren in 2002. Now, the site will be redeveloped, but the wind tunnel will be retained as part of both its heritage and technical requirements.

Audi F1 CEO and team principal Mattia Binotto stressed that the campus is more than just an infrastructure project. "The campus will play an important role in helping us attract and retain world-class talent while providing the foundations required to achieve our long-term ambitions," he said. "Building a successful Formula 1 team is ultimately about people. The best engineers, designers, mechanics and specialists want to work in an environment that allows them to collaborate, innovate and perform at their highest level. The campus will help us create exactly that environment."

Binotto also highlighted the uniqueness of the project. "What makes this project particularly special is that it allows us to shape the future of Audi Revolut F1 Team from the ground up. Opportunities like this are rare in modern Formula 1. We are not simply moving into an existing facility; we are creating a home designed around our people, our culture and our ambitions. This campus is an important part of that journey," he added.

Meanwhile, Audi's engine development facility will remain in Neuberg, and it will continue to maintain offices in Bicester, UK. The team established its UK satellite facility as a means of recruiting experienced personnel who were unwilling or unable to move to Switzerland. With the new campus in Hinwil, Audi hopes to strengthen its appeal to top talent in the motorsport industry.

This step signals that Audi means business in F1. After taking full operational control, they are now building both the physical and cultural foundation to compete at the front. The campus, due for completion in 2030, is expected to catalyse on-track performance as the team pursues its ambitious goals in the new regulatory era.
