Arvid Lindblad faced a bitter reality at the Dutch Grand Prix. F1 TV analyst Alex Brundle believes the drive-through penalty handed to the Racing Bulls driver was overly severe, especially as Lindblad was trying to avoid a crash right in front of him.
The incident occurred on the opening lap at Zandvoort when Max Verstappen lost control and went off at Turn 14. Lindblad, who was directly behind the four-time champion, had to take evasive action to avoid debris scattered across the track. In that maneuver, he passed Pierre Gasly, who was slowing for Turn 1, and that moment was deemed a yellow flag violation by the stewards.
Brundle argued that such situations place drivers in a difficult position. He explained that when a driver is avoiding an accident, their primary focus is on avoiding contact and not becoming part of the incident. Adding the obligation to respect overtaking rules in such a critical moment seems unrealistic, especially if no yellow flag was clearly visible.
Lindblad himself admitted he saw no flags or warning signals at the time. In an interview with F1 TV, he recounted nearly hitting Verstappen's tire and simply trying to stay on track to prevent further incidents. The stewards' decision to impose a drive-through penalty practically ruined the race for the 19-year-old rookie, as he lost significant time and positions.
The decision has sparked debate over the interpretation of rules in emergency situations. Some argue the stewards were too rigid in applying regulations, while others emphasize the importance of safety and compliance with signals. However, Brundle insisted that if a driver does not actually pass a yellow flag and is merely avoiding an incident, penalizing them for overtaking another driver in the process is excessive.
With this outcome, Lindblad had to accept that valuable points slipped away at Zandvoort. Nevertheless, he took the decision in stride. "It is what it is," he said. This decision certainly serves as a valuable lesson for the young driver to be more cautious in unpredictable racing situations.
