Tony Arbolino showcased his prowess at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In the second free practice (FP2) session for the Moto2 class on Saturday morning, the Italian set the fastest lap time of 1'35.207, beating Manuel Gonzalez and Alonso Lopez. The session was challenging due to partially wet and drying track conditions.
The FP2 session for the Red Bull Grand Prix of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera started with a still-damp track. Not all riders went out immediately. Barry Baltus was among those who took an early risk and briefly led the timesheets. However, as the track dried, tire strategy became key.
The transition phase is always tricky: too dry for wet tires, but too wet for slicks. Arbolino was one of the first to switch to slicks, and that decision paid off immediately. He topped the timesheets, followed by others who also switched to dry tires.
Alonso Lopez briefly took the top spot before Arbolino reasserted his dominance in the final minutes. Manuel Gonzalez finished second, just 0.089 seconds behind, followed by Lopez at 0.114 seconds. Izan Guevara and Angel Piqueras completed the top five.
From the Dutch riders, Collin Veijer had to settle for 13th place with a time of 1'36.352, 1.145 seconds adrift of Arbolino. Veijer only went out in the second half of the session, leaving him with limited time to adapt to the rapidly changing conditions. Meanwhile, Barry Baltus finished 14th with 1'36.422, and Zonta van den Goorbergh was 27th with 1'37.613.
The FP2 result is an important boost for Arbolino ahead of qualifying. With the speed he showed in mixed conditions, he is a favorite for pole position. However, Gonzalez and Lopez will surely not back down. The Moto2 competition this season is incredibly tight, and every session is a proving ground.
For Veijer, this session was a valuable lesson. The young rider is still adapting to the Moto2 class, and the result at Misano could be a stepping stone. Qualifying will be the next test. Don't miss the Moto2 action at this legendary Italian circuit.
