Andrea Kimi Antonelli etched his name into the history books by winning the inaugural 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at the thrilling Madring circuit. The Mercedes driver capitalized on a perfectly timed Virtual Safety Car (VSC) to snatch the lead from Lando Norris and secure his seventh victory of the season.
Norris, who started from pole position, initially showed impressive pace, but Mercedes' bold strategy call proved decisive. Max Verstappen had to settle for second after applying pressure throughout, while Norris fought back to finish third after a spirited second half of the race.
Race Report
As the lights went out, Norris got a clean start from pole. Antonelli, starting second, ran wide at the first chicane but quickly recovered. Behind them, Oscar Piastri suffered damage in a Lap 1 incident and dropped to 11th. Verstappen, running second, was under investigation for cutting Turn 1 while avoiding Hamilton.
Hamilton became the first casualty of the treacherous Madring layout, suffering brake issues and crashing into the barriers on Lap 7. Meanwhile, Antonelli received multiple track limits warnings for running wide, including at Turn 17, but he remained composed and maintained his rhythm.
In the middle stint, Mercedes plotted an undercut on Leclerc. The golden opportunity came when a VSC was deployed for an incident. Antonelli, who had yet to pit, dived in and emerged as the race leader, ahead of Norris who had already stopped. That call proved to be the winning move.
Norris refused to give up, launching a comeback in the second half of the race, but the gap was too large. Verstappen also struggled to close in on Antonelli despite applying pressure. At the chequered flag, Antonelli took a historic win at the new circuit, followed by Verstappen and Norris.
With this result, Antonelli strengthens his championship lead with 7 wins from 10 races. Norris and Verstappen remain his closest challengers, but Antonelli's consistency with Mercedes makes him the title favourite. The Madring race also proved that the circuit demands high precision and smart strategy, which Antonelli and his team executed flawlessly.
