Andrea Kimi Antonelli still leads the drivers' championship with a 66-point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix. However, this race weekend at Sepang is the most anticipated: Mercedes will finally introduce the long-awaited development package for the W17. The young Italian driver shared his expectations.
“The updates should provide more grip and additional downforce. We hope to get more grip; we'll see how the car's balance changes with the new parts and which aspects we need to improve. In theory, almost everything,” Antonelli told the media in Malaysia. He also highlighted the challenging characteristics of the Sepang circuit. “I think this track will be a good test for me, as it has long corners where it's crucial not to slow the car too much. That's an aspect I probably need to work on a lot, but I can't wait to tackle it. I did a few laps in the simulator and the sensations were good, but obviously we'll see on track.”
This technical update is a major hope for Mercedes to pull away again from Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull, who have recently threatened the Brackley team's dominance. The arrival of the new package at Sepang is expected to restore the championship-winning performance that has wavered in recent rounds.

Antonelli also reflected on a difficult weekend in Baku, where he was eliminated in Q1 due to an avoidable mistake, before finishing fifth after a cautious race. “Last weekend was probably the worst of my season so far, but I learned valuable lessons. The Baku race was very particular for me because I consciously tried not to take risks and drive below the limit: an unusual but positive feeling. That was exactly what I needed on Sunday: a clean result after a very troubled weekend. After the race, I wasn't satisfied with the position, but I learned a lot. The most important lesson is that I must always give 100%. I really have to push to the maximum to get the best possible result, because if I don't do everything the right way – or if I don't try to do everything in my power – nothing good will come,” he concluded.
With a 66-point lead, Antonelli's position at the top of the standings is still relatively safe. However, pressure from Russell and other rivals will increase, especially if Mercedes' updates don't deliver immediate results. Sepang, with its fast corners and high downforce demands, will be the real test for the new W17 package and for Antonelli's ability to maximize the car's potential.
Mercedes cannot afford to be complacent. Ferrari and McLaren have shown fluctuating performance, while Red Bull is always a threat. If this development works, the Silver Arrows could dominate again. But if it fails, the title fight could change dramatically. All eyes will be on the first free practice session in Malaysia to see how much improvement the German manufacturer has brought.
