Andrea Stella Slams Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri Collision at Singapore GP 2026

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has expressed his severe disappointment with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri colliding during the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix sprint race. The high-profile clash between the two McLaren teammates on the final lap has been labeled as simply unacceptable by the team management, triggering renewed discussions regarding internal racing guidelines.

The dramatic tangle unfolded on the final lap of a wet 20-lap sprint race when Lando Norris made a lunge on Oscar Piastri on the inside of Turn 5. Failing to back out of a rapidly closing gap, Norris struck his teammate's right-rear corner. The heavy impact sent both machines spinning out of control, eliminating Piastri on the spot with severe rear-end damage to his MCL40, while Norris salvaged an eighth-place finish.

Following a post-race investigation, Formula 1 stewards summoned both drivers to review the telemetry and footage. Ultimately, the governing body decided to take no further action, noting that both drivers contributed to the incident and neither could be held wholly or predominantly to blame for the unfortunate collision on the damp asphalt.

Despite avoiding sporting penalties, the incident proved exceptionally costly and completely avoidable for the Woking-based squad. Mechanics faced a massive scramble to repair Piastri's severely damaged car and replace his gearbox ahead of the main event, resulting in a hefty repair bill and a devastating loss of valuable championship points in the fiercely contested constructors' battle.

Coming on the heels of previous on-track flashpoints that forced McLaren to tighten up its internal rules of engagement—famously dubbed the Papaya Rules—Andrea Stella made no secret of his frustration. Speaking to the media, the Italian engineer reiterated that team interests supersede any individual ambitions and that personal egos must never eclipse the collective goals of the organization.

Addressing the media after internal discussions, Oscar Piastri revealed that his teammate had promptly offered an apology to him and the wider team. The Australian adopted a diplomatic stance, emphasizing that the unnecessary crash placed an excessive workload on the mechanics and wasted precious points that could have easily been secured.

Echoing the stewards' perspective, Lando Norris admitted that both drivers could have handled the tight battle differently to avert the disaster. Although neither driver was happy with the outcome, both camps held constructive talks behind closed doors to clear the air, ensuring the team remains unified moving forward into the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
