Max Verstappen and George Russell delivered one of the most thrilling battles of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. For the first half of the race, Russell built a gap of over 10 seconds to the chasing pack. But a safety car changed everything, and Verstappen showed his killer instinct to close in and nearly steal victory at the line.
Russell, driving for Mercedes, was impressive in the middle sector of the Baku circuit. Data showed that every time he navigated the tight corners around the old city, he pulled away from Verstappen. But once on the straights, Verstappen seemed to be pulled by a giant bungee cord. Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord vividly described it: “It was like Max was on some sort of massive bungee cord.”
The crucial moment came on lap 31 when Alex Albon crashed into the wall at Turn 5, triggering a safety car. Russell's advantage vanished instantly. Verstappen seized the restart to pass Oscar Piastri and immediately latched onto Russell. Although Russell remained faster in the middle sector, Verstappen could always close in on the straights, even without overtake mode.
On the final lap, Valtteri Bottas went off at Turn 15, forcing yellow flags. Russell had to slow down, and his turbo lost boost. “On the last lap you can drain the battery from top to bottom so you don't have to keep the pack balanced for the following lap,” Lord explained. “We were fortunate to have that in the pocket because the gap had gone from a second and a half to half a second through that double yellow. George dropped off the boost slightly as well, which sometimes can happen when the car speed drops too low and the engine speed does as well.”
Verstappen capitalized on the moment to launch a final attack. The finish line gap was just 0.196 seconds, making it one of the closest finishes in world championship history. GPS analysis showed Verstappen's straight-line speed was almost vertical, as if he had extra power from nowhere. Interestingly, he seemed faster without overtake mode, a counterintuitive phenomenon.
For Mercedes, this result was both a blow and a lesson. Russell had shown brilliant performance all weekend but lost the win due to external factors. For Red Bull, it was proof that Verstappen never gives up, even when his car isn't dominant. The drivers' championship is tightening, and this duel will be remembered as one of the most dramatic battles of the season.
With speed and strategy constantly evolving, the rivalry between Mercedes and Red Bull is expected to intensify in the remaining races. If Russell and Verstappen continue to deliver such spectacles, fans will not want to miss a second.
