Fernando Alonso is not just known for his speed on track, but also for the warm moments he shares with his family. Recently, the two-time Formula 1 world champion revealed how he introduced his son, Leonard, to motorsport. Imagine, at just two months old, Leonard already felt the wind on his face in a go-kart.

In an interview with Spanish radio sports programme El Larguero, Alonso opened up about adapting to fatherhood alongside his busy racing schedule. “We already took a lap in a kart. When he was two months old, I took him for a lap in my arms. He already felt the wind on his face,” the 45-year-old explained.

Leonard is now six months old. Alonso, who is typically very private about his personal life, seemed eager to share. “I think he's delighted with everything. Right now, he's a very smiley child, and it's truly wonderful,” he added. “When I'm home, the few moments I have make up for all the difficulties we're having professionally.”

The 2026 season itself has been a tough challenge for the Aston Martin team. High expectations accompanied the new power unit partnership with Honda and the first car designed under Adrian Newey's leadership. However, issues with both the car and power unit quickly became apparent. The team introduced a B-spec car at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with power unit upgrades following at the next race. Currently, they sit 10th in the constructors' standings with three points.

Amid performance pressure, Alonso has found new happiness. After months of speculation about his future, he signed a contract extension with Aston Martin until at least the end of 2027. “Next year I want to share the circuits, the trips around the world, and take lots of photos with him,” he said hopefully. “When I leave Formula 1, it's clear I'm not going to be travelling to 24 countries every year, am I? So, hopefully I can share a little more with him.”

Alonso's revelation adds a human touch to a driver usually associated with on-track determination. At an age that is no longer young by F1 standards, he remains competitive, but also realizes that time with family is precious. The karting lap with Leonard might be the start of a small family tradition.

For fans, this story reminds us that behind the helmet and balaclava, there is a caring father. Alonso is enjoying his new role, and who knows, one day Leonard might follow in his father's racing footsteps. For now, what matters most is the smile of his little one.
