Alonso Reveals Real Reason for Staying in F1 Until 2027

Fernando Alonso has decided to extend his Formula 1 career until the 2027 season, marking his 24th year in the sport. The announcement came ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, ending months of speculation about his future with Aston Martin.

The decision was swift. Alonso revealed that his conversation with team owner Lawrence Stroll lasted only about five minutes. "We didn't have much to discuss. We both wanted to continue. It was a five-minute talk and then we announced it," he said in Sepang.

Interestingly, Alonso had previously stated that his future depended on the 2027 regulations. The power ratio between internal combustion and electric will shift to 58-42 in 2027. However, nothing has changed since his comments in Madrid, yet Alonso still gave the green light.

The real reason is his burning motivation. "I have no guarantees that 2027 will be more fun, but it is a commitment to yourself," he continued. "I feel fast, I feel motivated and I feel that I'm enjoying what I'm doing."

When asked by Motorsport.com about his motivation, Alonso said, "If I'm sitting at home watching TV and watching the races, I will feel that I can do better than them. That's what I felt when I was away from F1. I was always feeling the fire inside of being there and trying to do better. I still feel it now."

With the new contract, Alonso will still be competing at the age of 46. He also joked about discussing with his family, "My wife is very supportive, she's feeling the pain this year as well and she's worried..."

The decision was also influenced by his strong relationship with Aston Martin and his belief that he can still compete at the highest level. Although the 2027 regulations are not final, he trusts the team will adapt well.
