Fernando Alonso has officially extended his contract with Aston Martin for the 2027 Formula 1 season, which will mark the Spaniard's 24th season in the pinnacle of motorsport. The announcement came ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, following long speculation about the future of the two-time world champion. This decision underscores Alonso's commitment to continue competing at the highest level, despite his age.
The negotiation process for the new contract was remarkably quick. Alonso revealed that his conversation with team owner Lawrence Stroll lasted only five minutes. "I took the decision quite recently, and sitting with Lawrence was very straightforward," he said during media day at Sepang. "We didn't have much to discuss. We both wanted to continue at that point. It was a five-minute talk and then we announced it." This statement indicates that the decision was well-considered and did not require lengthy debate.
Interestingly, the timing of the announcement is significant. Previously in Madrid, Alonso stated that his future would largely depend on the regulation changes for 2027. The 2027 technical regulations will shift the power ratio between the internal combustion engine and electrical power to 58-42, from the previous 60-40. However, nothing has changed in next year's regulations since Madrid, yet Alonso has still given the green light to continue. The real reason for carrying on turns out to be slightly different: Alonso says he still feels the fire inside and does not want to let that go.
"I have no guarantees that 2027 will be more fun, but it is a commitment that you have to make to yourself," he continued. "And at the end of the day, I feel fast, I feel motivated and I feel that I'm enjoying what I'm doing." When asked by Autosport about his motivation to continue, Alonso said: "If I'm sitting at home watching TV and watching the races, I will feel that I can do better than them. I was always feeling the fire inside of being there and trying to do better. I still feel it now and I said, you know, until I have that fire inside, I think it's no time to stop."
The new contract means Alonso will still be competing in F1 next year at the age of 46. When asked how long he had to discuss another year with those at home, he joked that it was not about family duties, but more about his way of understanding life and motorsport. "My wife..." he joked, but the essence is that family support is a key factor in this decision.
For Aston Martin, retaining Alonso is a strategic move to maintain stability and experience within the team. Alonso's vast experience will be invaluable in developing the car for the new 2027 regulations. The team has also confirmed that Lance Stroll will remain as his teammate, so the duo will continue working together. Thus, Aston Martin demonstrates its ambition to continue competing at the front.
Alonso himself has made it clear that he will not stop as long as he still has the passion for racing. At an age that will reach 46, he remains one of the most competitive drivers on the grid.
