Fernando Alonso has officially ended speculation about his future by signing a new contract with Aston Martin to continue in Formula 1 through the 2027 season. The announcement closes a saga that had been the talk of the paddock for months.
The 45-year-old had previously been reluctant to commit, especially with his existing contract set to expire at the end of the 2026 campaign. Alonso had publicly stated that his decision depended on the direction of the technical regulations, particularly the 2026 ruleset that places greater emphasis on electrical power. His hesitation was also seen as a way to apply pressure on F1, especially after he held meetings with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
"I'm very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin," Alonso said in an official statement. "I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level. I'm committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed. I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities."
Alonso's journey with Aston Martin since joining from Alpine in 2023 has been a rollercoaster. He initially impressed with six podiums in his first eight races, adding two more later that year. However, since then, the team has largely struggled. Aston Martin was outdeveloped by rivals and made a horrendous start to the 2026 regulations, partly due to an uncompetitive Honda engine. Currently, the Silverstone-based squad sits 10th in the constructors' standings with just three points—all scored by Alonso—and is only ahead of newcomer Cadillac.
Despite the challenges, Alonso's decision to stay demonstrates his belief in Aston Martin's long-term project. He expressed a desire to create more memories on track in front of the fans. "Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special," he added.
Alongside Alonso's announcement, Aston Martin also confirmed a contract extension for Lance Stroll. The Canadian will embark on his ninth season with the team after joining from Williams. "I'm very happy to continue with Aston Martin for the long term," Stroll said. "I've been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team. There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me."
With this confirmation, Aston Martin has secured its driver lineup for the coming years, providing stability amid efforts to climb back up the grid. Alonso, now 45, will remain the oldest driver on the grid and continues to add to his F1 appearance record. The team hopes to leverage Alonso's experience and speed to return to the front.
