Alex Marquez Rues 'Stupid Mistake' That Cost Podium at Silverstone

Silverstone always has a way of testing a rider's mentality, and this weekend Alex Marquez felt it firsthand. Starting from seventh on the grid, his mission was clear: break into the leading pack and secure a podium. But a mistake on the opening lap changed everything. Instead of standing on the rostrum, the Gresini rider had to settle for fourth, with a mix of pride and disappointment.

Marquez didn't hide his frustration. "I think the changes we made today were aimed at securing second place, our chance to get it. But the mistake on the first lap, when I overtook Marco [Bezzecchi], made me feel optimistic. I tried again a bit later, braking with the front, and then lost rear grip. That cost us the podium today, but anyway, I think we gave our best," he admitted.

The battle with Marco Bezzecchi was a highlight. The two traded overtakes fiercely, but Marquez acknowledged his rival's edge. "Usually races go like this, overtaking each other repeatedly, fighting until the end. That's what matters most. I think Marco raced fair. His character allowed him to save energy for the last two laps. And, of course, he was faster than us at that point, which saved us from having to back out of the race," he explained.

He also detailed the technical issues he faced in the thick of the fight. "When I made the mistake at the first corner, I felt the first rear slide. But at that moment, the tire moved a bit, but they told me, 'Keep going,' because I was going a bit faster than Pedro [Acosta], and he could go a bit faster. And then, when I got back into my rhythm, when there are many bikes ahead of you with big wings like ours, the bike sometimes does strange things. So when you're alone, everything is more stable. But then I felt the slide and, towards the end, the last slide," he said.

Aprilia's advantage, especially in the middle sector, was a decisive factor. "What they had more than us was their starting position. I think our seventh place hurt us a lot. We had a great chance not only to be with Raul [Fernandez], but also to get on the podium, and with the mistake at the first corner, we could have done it too. But apart from that, especially between turns 7 and 9, they were much faster than us. And that's where I lost about a second and a half," he revealed.

Despite that, there's a silver lining. Marquez sees significant progress on his Ducati compared to the start of the season. "I think compared to the beginning of the year, the gap is much smaller. Especially on tracks like this, where Aprilia has always been very, very fast. So I think we're getting closer. We're doing a fantastic job at Ducati," he said.

In the end, regret still lingers. "When you lose a podium chance because of a stupid mistake, it's totally unacceptable on my part. Because at that moment I was a bit past the braking point. When you have more potential and you see that the podium is a realistic goal," he concluded with remorse. Now, all eyes are on how he bounces back at the next race.
