Alex Marquez ended the MotoGP Misano 2025 race with a broad smile after finishing second, his first podium since a huge crash in Catalunya in May. The Gresini rider started from ninth after two qualifying crashes, but fought back to deliver a strong result for the team in their special Marco Simoncelli livery.
The race was dramatic. Alex, who will move to the factory KTM team next season, had to overtake many riders to reach the front. "I just tried to give 100 percent. It's true I used a lot of energy, but I believed that was the way to do it," he said. Luck also came his way when Marco Bezzecchi crashed out of second, opening the door for Alex to take P2.
The podium felt special as it was Alex's final Italian GP with Gresini. "A huge honour to wear these colours, but especially to be on the podium. For Gresini, it's a really important GP. And it will be my last GP with Gresini in Italy, so it was emotional," he added.
During the race, Alex closed in on his brother, Marc Marquez, who was leading. But he realised Marc always had something in hand. "When I attacked, he attacked. When I relaxed a little, he relaxed. So he was playing a little bit," Alex said. "I think he had maybe 0.1s more rhythm than me, and for that reason he was able to control the gap in a really good way."
Nevertheless, Alex was pleased with the outcome. He admitted that starting from the front row would make things easier. "But I think today Marc and Bezzecchi had something more than me, maybe just half or one tenth, but here one tenth is a lot. For that reason, Marc was able to play a little bit with me at the end. But if you are on the front row and you make a good qualifying, you have more chances. So this P2 for me is quite unexpected," he explained.
With this result, Alex moves up to eighth in the MotoGP World Championship, ahead of Marc's Ducati teammate, Pecco Bagnaia. This podium is proof of Alex's consistency this season, despite missing races due to injury. He now looks ahead to the rest of the season with the aim of securing a top-five championship finish.
For Gresini, this podium is a sweet farewell gift before losing Alex to KTM. The satellite Ducati team still has a few races left to add to their podium tally. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez continues to dominate with a win at Misano, strengthening his position at the top of the standings.
