Alex Marquez saw a promising Japanese Grand Prix weekend at Motegi end prematurely after crashing from eighth position in the closing stages of the race.
The Gresini Ducati rider had displayed impressive pace since Friday practice, but his weekend was heavily compromised by a double long-lap penalty stemming from a first-lap Sprint incident.
A recurring foot placement error during downshifting proved costly, triggering unexpected engine braking behavior that caused crashes in both the Sunday morning warm-up session and the Grand Prix.

"I did mistakes in both the warm-up and the race. I just didn't put the foot where I need to put it there, in lean angle, and instead of shifting down, I shifted up. Twice," explained Alex Marquez.
Beyond his personal riding errors, the entire paddock was taken by surprise by the strong performance of Michelin's reinforced hard rear tyre compound introduced for the main race.
The scoreless outing at Motegi also cost Alex Marquez positions in the MotoGP world championship standings ahead of the upcoming Indonesian Grand Prix.
