Albon Extends Williams Contract to 2027, Stays as Leader

Alex Albon has chosen to stay with Williams for the 2027 Formula 1 season after agreeing a short-term contract extension. The decision ends speculation over his future and reinforces his commitment to the team's revival project at Grove.

The 30-year-old joined Williams in 2022 and was one of several drivers out of contract at the end of this year. Interest from other teams had surfaced, but Albon ultimately opted to continue his journey with the team as it rebuilds into a modern F1 operation.

"Since joining Atlassian Williams F1 Team in 2022, the transformation this team has made is difficult to put into words," Albon said in a team statement. "One tough year doesn't tell the full picture, and it only gives me more motivation to keep building and pushing together with the factory and our fans to achieve great things. Our story is not over yet, so my full focus now is on doing whatever it takes to get us back up the grid."

Albon's faith comes after a disappointing 2026 season, where Williams slumped to ninth in the standings, a stark contrast to their fifth-place finish the previous year. Despite this, team principal James Vowles stressed that Albon has been the leader of this transformation project since day one.

"Alex is one of the best drivers on the grid and knows better than anyone the enormous improvements we have made in recent years – re-signing him shows the belief we both have in the direction we are heading," Vowles said. Teammate Carlos Sainz has yet to commit his own future to the team.

With this extension, Albon will enter his sixth consecutive season with Williams in 2027. He has already surpassed 100 races for the team and become its longest-serving driver, overtaking Nigel Mansell. Now, all eyes are on how Albon and Williams will bounce back from last season's struggles.
